DAY 1

9:30 Meet at Windy Point. Introductions and form small groups.

  • Students: are waiting in the vehicles or on the sidewalk for instructions.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are meeting with Sky School staff and providing required paperwork, setting expectation of school's code of conduct for students, dividing students into inquiry groups, and choosing a group to accompany.
  • Sky School staff: are receiving and checking required paperwork, meeting with teachers and chaperones, then introducing themselves and expectations in large groups

9:40 Introductory activities

  • Sky School staff: are passing out field journals, leading sense of place or teambuilding activities, leading guided inquiry on topic of research expertise.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, writing hypotheses, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

10:15 Drive to Sky Center

10:45 Check in to Sky Center

  • Students: are putting gear in dorms, dressing for being outdoors, finding their lunch, filling water bottles
  • Teachers and chaperones: are assisting students in preparing for day
  • Sky School staff: are preparing for teaching, gathering equipment

11:15 Exploratory hike and brainstorming

  • Students: are hiking through summit area (not going far), generating guided project ideas with 20 questions, discussing methods
  • Teachers and chaperones: are hiking with students
  • Sky School staff: are leading hike, setting expectations for inquiry project

12:00 Lunch

  • Students: are eating in field
  • Teachers and chaperones: are eating in field
  • Sky School staff: are eating in field

12:30 Inquiry project final planning

  • Students: are finalizing methods, equipment list, and hypotheses for projects
  • Teachers and chaperones: are helping students remain focused
  • Sky School staff: are guiding inquiry project development, leading teambuilding activities

1:15 Begin inquiry project

  • Sky School staff: are returning to Sky Center if needed for any missing equipment, then continuing in field.
  • Students: are carrying out inquiry project.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are circulating with small groups, engaged and supporting Sky School staff and assisting students as needed.

3:00 Snack break

  • Sky School staff: are leading 10 minutes of silence and snack break activities
  • Students: are relaxing and eating
  • Teachers and chaperones: are relaxing and eating

3:15 Return to Sky Center for data analysis and posters

  • Sky School staff: are leading hike back to indoor spaces, facilitating data analysis and poster making (with extensive guidance)
  • Students: are analyzing data, making conclusions, drawing poster
  • Teachers and chaperones: are relaxing and eating

5:00 Return to SkyCenter for rest

  • Students: are in dormitories resting quietly or walking around campus if escorted
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students, ensuring students bring warm clothes to dinner
  • Sky School staff: are preparing evening programs, dinner, or resting

6:00 Dinner

  • Students: are eating
