DAY 1


9:30 Meet at Babad Do’Ag. Introductions and form small groups.

  • Students: are waiting in the vehicles or on the sidewalk for instructions.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are meeting with Sky School staff and providing required paperwork, setting expectation of school's code of conduct for students, dividing students into groups of four, and choosing a group to accompany.
  • Sky School staff: are receiving and checking required paperwork, meeting with teachers and chaperones, then with whole group to introduce themselves and give instructions for dividing students into groups of four.

9:45 Take initial set of data points for introductory activity

  • Sky School staff: are passing out field journals, leading discussion of the differences between Tucson and Sky Island, and asking for hypotheses about the reasons for those differences, directing students on how to take measurements with instruments and record them.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, writing hypotheses, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

10:45 Arrive at Windy Point for second set of data points

  • Sky School staff: are assisting students in taking another set of measurements, and facilitating discussion about the unique geology and their observations of changes already visible in the environment halfway up Mt. Lemmon.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

12:00 Lunch at SkyCenter campus

  • Students: are eating and cleaning up
  • Teachers and chaperones: are eating and primarily responsible for organizing students and monitoring bathroom breaks during this down time to give Sky School staff time to prepare for the next activities
  • Sky School staff: are eating and preparing for next activities

12:30 Take third set of data points

  • Sky School staff: are assisting students in taking another set of measurements, and facilitating discussion about the landscape and geologic history of the region, and the biological differences at the summit of Mt. Lemmon.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with the discussion, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

1:00 Hike the Meadow Loop trail, including 10 mins silence activity

  • Sky School staff: are leading the hike around the Meadow Loop trail, including student values statement, 10 minutes silence activity and predator/prey game, stop at spring to discuss water issues Spring_water_lesson_plan, running rotation activities (e.g. dendrochronology), synthesizing up-the-mountain data
  • Students: are participating in hike
  • Teachers and chaperones: are divided up into hiking groups (helping to enforce 10 minutes silence).

4:30 Return to SkyCenter for rest

  • Students: are in dormitories resting quietly or walking around campus if escorted
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students
  • Sky School staff: are preparing evening programs, dinner, or resting

5:48 Sunset (arrive at summit sunset point by 5:45)

  • Students: are listening to Sky School staff's instructions, are taking photographs
  • Teachers and chaperones: are actively engaged with students and Sky School staff
  • Sky School staff: are instructing students on atmospheric and solar visuals, including shadow color, Mt. Lemmon's shadow, or the green rim

6:00 Dinner

  • Students: are eating
  • Teachers and chaperones: are eating, supervising students
  • Sky School staff: are serving, eating, cleaning, playing a video on the screen

7:00 Presentation of up-the-mountain

  • Students: are giving short oral presentations on their research findings
  • Teachers and chaperones: are serving as audience for presentations
  • Sky School staff: Are introducing and guiding research presentations

7:20 Evening telescope observing and possible alternate activity rotation

  • Students: are at telescope or Minnesota for daily activity
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising activities
  • Sky School staff: are leading activities

8:45 Evening wrap-up

  • Students: are in dormitories
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students
  • Sky School staff: are resting or preparing for the morning


Day 2

7:45 Staff meeting (NOTE: Students are not permitted to be in the Learning Center until breakfast at 8 am)

  • Sky School Staff: are discussing logistics and preparing for the day Morning_staff_meeting_agenda
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students in the dorms or outdoor areas
  • Students: are cleaning dorms, packing belongings, exploring outdoor areas with a chaperone

8:00 Breakfast

  • Sky School Staff: are helping serve breakfast, engaging with students, eating.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are organizing students to get out of dorms, calling order to serve themselves, eating.
  • Students: are eating, cleaning up.

8:30 Surveys and observations

  • Sky School Staff: are providing surveys, leading observations of weather and phenology
  • Teachers and chaperones: are filling out surveys
  • Students: are filling out surveys, participating in weather / phenology observations

8:50 Cleanup

  • Sky School Staff: are inspecting dorms
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students cleaning out dorms, packing vehicles
  • Students: are moving out of the dorms, cleaning up

9:20 Closing circle

  • Students: are sharing what they learned and enjoyed after handing in survey
  • Teachers and chaperones: are sharing what they learned and enjoyed
  • Sky School staff: are sharing what they learned and enjoyed

10:00 Depart

  • Students: are checking they have everything with them, and loading vehicles.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are checking they have everything and everyone with them, have given Sky School staff all required paperwork, and loading vehicles.
  • Sky School staff: are checking nothing and no one is left behind, opening gates for vehicles to leave.

10:15 Cleanup Sky School Staff: are packing all teaching materials, returning medical paperwork, cleaning campus
