Generic 3 Night Program Schedule

DAY 1

9:00 Meet at Babad Do’Ag. Introductions and form small groups.

  • Students: are waiting in the vehicles or on the sidewalk for instructions.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are meeting with Sky School staff and providing required paperwork, setting expectation of school's code of conduct for students, dividing students into groups of four, and choosing a group to accompany.
  • Sky School staff: are receiving and checking required paperwork, meeting with teachers and chaperones, then with whole group to introduce themselves and give instructions for dividing students into groups of four.

9:15 Take initial set of data points for introductory activity

  • Sky School staff: are passing out field journals, leading discussion of the differences between Tucson and Sky Island, and asking for hypotheses about the reasons for those differences, directing students on how to take measurements with instruments and record them (Take initial set of data points--weather, plant species diversity, rock observations. Then follow up with Travel in Time drawings SOP activity to begin to explore formation of basin-range topography, with follow-up discussion.)
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, writing hypotheses, taking measurements, recording data, making observations, drawing.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

11:00 Arrive at Molino Basin for second set of data points

  • Sky School staff: are assisting students in taking another set of measurements, and facilitating discussion about the unique geology and their observations of changes already visible in the environment halfway up Mt. Lemmon.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

11:45 Arrive at Windy Point for lunch and third set of data points

  • Sky School staff: are assisting students in taking another set of measurements, and facilitating discussion about the unique geology and their observations of changes already visible in the environment halfway up Mt. Lemmon.
  • Students: are participating in this discussion, taking measurements, recording data, making observations.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged with small groups, supporting Sky School staff, and assisting students as needed with measurements.

1:30 Arrive at SkyCenter campus for dorm check in and nap break

  • Students: are moving luggage into dorms, then quietly reading or sleeping on their beds
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students, directing their move in to the correct rooms and ensuring quiet break time
  • Sky School staff: are orienting chaperones to the dorms, then having down time and prepping next activities.

2:15 Hiking and data analysis

  • Sky School staff: Half are leading the hike around the Meadow Loop trail, including student values statement, 10 minutes silence activity, data analysis of up the mountain data, possible stop at spring to discuss water issues Spring_water_lesson_plan
  • Students: are participating in hike or graphing data and writing conclusions.
  • Teachers and chaperones: are divided up either hiking (helping to enforce 10 minutes silence) or assisting students with graphing and conclusions.

4:45 Mandatory rest

  • Sky School staff: are resting, preparing for evening program
  • Students: are resting or reading quietly in dorms
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising in dorms

5:45 Rotation activities

  • Sky School Staff: are leading Rotation activities
  • Students: are engaged in activities
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged in activities

6:05 Dinner

  • Students: are eating
  • Teachers and chaperones: are eating, while engaging with and supervising students
  • Sky School staff: are playing a video on the screen, serving food, eating, and engaging with students

6:45 Introduction to scientific research and hypothesis testing

  • Students: are listening to presentation
  • Teachers and chaperones: are listening to presentation, helping to clean up dinner, and engage students
  • Sky School staff: are cleaning up or presenting

7:15 Return to dorms to gather warm clothes

  • Students: are collecting water bottles, ALL their warm clothes, and field journals for the evening
  • Teachers and chaperones: are gathering those materials, and supervising students in the dorms
  • Sky School staff: are preparing evening astronomy activities

7:30 Evening telescope observing and alternate activity rotations

  • Students: are participating in observing
  • Teachers and chaperones: are participating and assisting in engaging students
  • Sky School staff: are leading activities

9:00 Return to dorms

  • Sky School staff: are cleaning up, having downtime, prepping for next day, going to bed
  • Teachers and chaperones: are responsible for supervising students, and ensuring they get up and get to breakfast the next morning
  • Students: are getting ready for bed

10:00 Lights out


DAY 2

7:45 Staff meeting (NOTE: Students are not permitted to be in the Learning Center until breakfast at 8 am)

  • Teachers and chaperones: are organizing students to get out of dorms, calling order to serve themselves, eating.
  • Students: are eating, cleaning up.

8:30 Pack lunches

  • Sky School Staff: are cleaning up, packing lunch
  • Teachers and chaperones: are cleaning up, packing lunch, making sure each student has a lunch packed
  • Students: are packing lunch, filling water bottles

8:50 Rotation activities

  • Sky School Staff: are leading Rotation activities
  • Students: are engaged in activities
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged in activities

9:00 Inquiry group team building

  • Sky School Staff: are meeting inquiry groups, making group contract, formalize group name, leading teambuilding / getting-to-know-you exercises
  • Teachers and chaperones: are managing students
  • Students: are meeting mentors, participating in group activities

9:30 Recap of the scientific process, including testable hypotheses (do in inquiry groups)

  • Sky School Staff: are presenting information
  • Teachers and chaperones: are engaged and participating, assisting students as needed
  • Students: are participating.

9:50 Twenty questions activity

  • Students: are brainstorming 20 potential research questions
  • Teachers and chaperones: are circulating to assist as needed
  • Sky School staff: are circulating to assist as needed

10:10 Introduction to research area

  • Sky School Staff: are starting with discussion of the 20 questions, giving intro to their area of expertise
  • Teachers and chaperones: are assisting small groups as needed.
  • Students: are discussing and deciding on their research project topic question.

10:40-11:00 Short break

  • Sky School Staff: are having down time or prep time
  • Teachers and chaperones: are supervising students in dorms or common areas
  • Students: are having down time and a small snack

11:00 Design a research question and methods and analyses

  • Sky School Staff: are leading discussion of how to design project
  • Teachers and chaperones: are assisting as needed
  • Students: are designing their research methods, writing plans in field notebook

12:00 Lunch

  • Sky School Staff: are eating
  • Teachers and chaperones: are eating, supervising students
  • Students: are eating

12:30 Mandatory nap break

1:10 Finish planning, collect data

  • Sky School Staff: are signing out group, verifying first aid / radio is present, are finishing any necessary planning, are traveling to field sites and assisting students in collecting data, leading teambuilding activities

3:00 Short break and snack

  • Sky School Staff: are snacking or resting
